Boston Market

Make sure to check out
http://web.me.com/hydra9/Site_5/Blog/Entries/2008/11/30_Sunday_NYT_%40_Boston_Market.html

Part of my post-Kickball Sunday Afternoon routine is to read the Sunday New York Times in a coffee shoppe. Normally I am in the city but came back to Daly City for various reasons. I do need to buy onions and some of the other components of curry as I fell well short of excellence for dinner and I had to do my washing up post travel.

So I took the New York times and walked to Starbucks. Normally on Sunday I am in someplace hipper that does not sell Akeelah and the Bee.

But I am in Daly City which was not the home of the beatnicks. So I walk to the Starbucks and it is packed. I cannot find the secret button to dump all of the patrons into the 5th Dimension so I go to plan B which was Boston Market which was across the street.

Now I am not sure when was the last time I went to this Thanksgiving themed place. I ordered a decaffeinated coffee and a cookie and sat down in a booth. I am pretty sure I was the only who did this.

Black Friday at the Harbor

It was a good day after Thanksgiving between the Spring Rolls and DD.
Marcus no like places that grouch at you for using a credit card. If he never used cash, that would be F I N E fine.
We went to the harbor and I gave Mum her iPod shuffle (I wanted simple) It has 220 songs including Neil Diamond, Robbie Williams, Rat Pack, Doris Day etc...
What songs from your library would you put on for your parents? for your kids?
Made this turkey curry based on what the man said. I always try to work in a Paul McCartney and Wings mention.

Eventful Thanksgiving

It was an eventful Thanksgiving day to say the least. I really need to figure out how to update my Mobile Me Blog remotely.
We picked Mom up from the Harbor and took her back to Churchton. The neighbors from across the street were really helpful and later we made an exchange of a pie and wine.
Then later in the day a joke was played that involved sound effects but it was played out. A big part of being funny is being subtle.
Finally we had a bit of basic car maintenance practice in the from of the Riva road fire station. I am glad there was not five alarm blaze at that moment.

Curry, Flying etc...

Whenever I travel anywhere or have to get up earlier than normal I feel a bit anxious.
Last Sunday prior to the 5K and having to wake up early, felt anxious. One way is to step back and acknowledge it.
Making sure everything I need keys/boarding pass, Sasha fed.
Once I get to the airport and through the queue I settle down a bit.
Hmm, I almost had a completely uncharged iPod. That would not have made for a fun Marcus. Tomorrow I am flying American and it is like flying in the past. Not a past that is unknown to me when flying was glamorous and such but a time when you did not have a seat back

Went to a talk at the World Affair Council about Curry and made sure I asked the question about making the kitchen yellow. Was told the components in making a proper curry. I remember Onion, Garlic, Ginger, Turmeric, Coriander and something else.

How to get bumped

http://web.me.com/hydra9/Site_5/Blog/Entries/2008/11/24_How_to_get_bumped.html

How to get bumped

For years when I travel and I have the time, I volunteer my seat and get the voucher. Once I was flying on United Miles to Australia and had a seven hour layover in LA. The flight from SFO to LA was overbooked so I volunteered my seat, got a free flight for spending four hours in the LA airport instead of seven. Another time I was put on a flight in the next gate, that was direct and in first class.

Here is what you do. Show up to the airport early. Much of the stress of flying comes from not budgeting enough time.

Go to the check in desk and ask, "Is this site oversold"? If the answer is yes, then ask to be placed on the voluntary do not board list. They will typically take your boarding pass until they make a decision if they will need the seat.

Now if they bid up what they are offering, they always give the early volunteers the things they offer at the end.

This entry was influenced by running into a fellow kickballer on the Divisadero who said she was bumped off her flight. Hoping to be bumped on Wednesday.

Faster than a whippet.

Faster than a whippet

To be honest I felt a bit anxious this morning. Had a 5K race in the park and my calf felt tight. I ran it and did OK, but felt much better with the running done. In the folklore of my life, I was more swift than a whippet in a foot race. The dog is shown above. I could imagine those when I am brought up in discussion they will say, "O yeah, the fellow who is faster than a whippet in a 5K!, yes, I know him, I owe him $10"

Part of my post-kickball Sunday routine is reading the New York times where I get all sorts of ideas on artists to check out and books to read or places to possibly travel to. But I really need to read a weather report before I go anywhere.

Went for a walk in Golden Gate Park.

Saw the new Bond movie at the Balboa. It was quite good.

Out of witty blog titles...

Drove down to the South San Francisco BART station and I had to park on the Ranch Opposite of Fred. One of the industries that are whining is the magazine industry. I subscribe to Esquire and the User Interface of a magazine is horrible with a comical amount of ads, especially the ones that make you turn to that page. The magazine that is the worst is GQ as it is often 50 pages before you get to anything beyond ads and the table of contents.

I am not a fan of these bailouts. It reminds me of the homeless people that direct you to a free spot. You have to pay him or he may break into your car. Now I doubt the CEO of Ford will break into my car, at least not this week but my Nissan Sentra was built in the United States and I know many "Domestic" cars are built in Mexico.

My question is this $25,000,000,000 or $83 per every American, are the domestic car companies going to be able to do business differently? Is it going to lead to a new era of wow, I was wrong about domestic cars. The Prius is the iPod of cars.

On a different note, I hate, hate running on treadmills. In my version of hell it will be loud DJ music and treadmills and people not wiping down their Mac Hines but talking on their cell phone...
The reason I ran indoors was that I did not want to run in what I thought was the rain. When I was done running, turns out that it became sunny. It seems I cannot anticipate anything right now.

Went to lunch 2.0 on 3rd Street as I am doing quite a bit of networking/outreach.

Then made way to a party for iWidgets. http://www.iwidgets.com/
Someone told me about a movie about Dennys which sounds interesting.

It's amazing what running without music can do....

Suddenly it got cloudy and windy and yes, dark.
I wore my yellow jacket because I had not run much in the dark.

Another big change was running without my iPod and it was not my best run.

At the Apple Store I tried to find out if I could update my Mobile Me hosted Blog via e-mail or an RSS field of the Blogger or Live Journal site but they did not know the answer and tried to look it up on Google. So if you know the answer let me know.

A new location for the Greatest Blog

Here is the new URL for the Greatest Blog
http://web.me.com/hydra9/Site_5/Blog/Blog.html
Change the URL... I may register a domain name that is catchy...

Best time of day

So I am trying out a new format for the Greatest Blog. I will still cross post to Blogger and LiveJournal in case either of these are destroyed by hot lava.

With the remains of the turkey from last week I made soup. It was quite good. Of course it had turmeric mixed in and onions and celery.

Had a minor miracle as I had a glass bottle shatter in my opposite of fred and I did not have any cuts which is good.

Went to the Park Chalet. The best time of day is dusk. When it is sunny they are not many nicer places.  The company was good.

Got two more of the $5.99 turkeys at the Safeway. Turns out that I had to buy $25 worth of stuff to get that price.

The store had quite a few derelicts. The security guard was earning his keep.

So one of the turkeys went into the freezer and the other one is being defrosted and will be what I will be eating for the next week.

Traded in some CD's at Amoeba and got some funk compilations.

New York Times + UAL = Osaka?

Today was the first Sunday with no kickball so instead of getting a case of Silver Bullet I started a half marathon training program.
Will be doing the Kaiser half on Super Bowl Sunday unless I get picked up by the team playing in the Superbowl.

Today was orientation. Sort of like the first day of school. We ran two miles. It has been really nice/slightly hot.
Saw a standard poodle which is a good omen.

The big difference between Fleet Feet and a Sports Authority is the sense of community that Fleet Feet fosters.

Purchased some pizza dough and made a roma style turkey pizza. It was the best pizza I have ever made. (right now I am making turkey soup)

Saw a stray cat in Clown Colony with a fancy tail. This lady was trying to talk me into taking the cat in but I am sure Sasha would be not too pleased.

Presidential Dog Walker/Marcus as Benson

It turns out that President-elect Barack Obama will be getting a dog.
He is thinking hypoallergenic. I think he should get a Standard Poodle.
No he will be busy so he will need the first dog to have a first rate dog sitter that understands standard poodles AND knows DC pretty well.
This could mean that I would be like a Benson for the 21st Century. (but a dog walker rather than a butler...)

Mortified

Tomorrow I will be part of the Mortified show in San Francisco.
When I printed "Lizard Man" I saw that I wrote that song on November 15th, 1988. Who would have thought when I wrote it, twenty years later I would be up on a stage reading it.
I thought it would be rocked out. Looking forward to it.

Went to the farmers market near closing for vegetables as I am still eating that turkey and will soon be making soup.

Overactive Imagination Helicopters and Keys

So the photos are from the last couple of days including me donating blood which played into my overactive imagination when I went running in the Presidio today.
First off I got clearance that I could go on an easy run 24 hours after donating blood.

Earlier in the day I went to some networking event at the Embarcadaro. I rush down to get back to my car but discover that I was not my keys. Luckily I found them at the venue but it put me over the validation time so it cost me $4.

When I ran from the Sports Basement to the foot of the Bridge, I saw two Helicopters. They seemed to follow me. My imagination ran a little wild and I thought it was a case of mistaken identity. Then I realized it was a bit silly.

Blood and Mindjet

One of the odd things that I enjoy is donating blood. I have not done it since April when I followed that with a run. I would not recommend that at all. Bad Idea.
But today was not a running day.
Anyway, after that was done, I went to MindJet to see their Mind Mapping Software. I could see quite a few uses for this including
1) Sourcing Strategies
2) Getting in better shape
3) Looking for a job

Later I went to VoiceCon and then MoMa followed by John Collins.
At one point I saw a swarm of birds but I hoped it was some odd UFO or something.

Saw a couple of Standard Poodles in the back of a Prius.

Hike in the Mist

So for some strange reason, I bought a Turkey that was on sale at Safeway. The guy had to get me a cart as I was holding it like a football.
Not enough room in the freezer so I will need to make it once it defrosts.

Ran in the rain/mist but happily nothing happened of much interest.

Met up with the UD crowd for a hike in the Mist. No photos because some genius forgot his battery.

Running and Guns

So for the most part when I go for a run, besides the distance and maybe seeing a dog, nothing happens that is worthy of being entered into the Greatest Blog.
Today was far different as near the end a police officers gun was drawn and my hands were up (the gun was not aimed at me, but I figured this was a good time not to be confusing.)

It was my first run since the USHalf. Having a few days of rest is good following a Half Marathon. I could run in Daly City but that sucks so I decided to go to Ocean Beach (on Saturday I am running with team in training around the Lake)

It is a short easy run today. I run from around Java Beach to the George W Bush Sewage Plant. On the way back I saw a guy in a wet suit chasing and yelling at another guy. The guy getting chased picked up a large log/stick and was backing up. They continued to yell at each other. Then one of San Francisco's finest shows up with gun drawn and tells the guy with the log to get down on the ground. At this point my hands are in the air as I did not want to confuse anyone.

It seemed the guy with the log and the gun drawn on him was talking on his cell phone and was being made fun of by the guy in the wet suit. It sort of escalated from there. Luckily they did not need to know my opinion on the sequence of events as I am sure all three (the guy in the wet suit, the guy with the stick/log and the police officer) would have all gotten annoyed with my view.

The Human Tornado

So the subject line is a tribute to the passing of one of my favorite comics, Rudy Ray Moore.
Before you google/You Tube make sure you know that his material is well, for grown folks.

My movie Graphite Returns, was a low budget influenced by his movie Dolemite. One of these days I will put it up on You Tube.

Was in Redwood City where I went to an Indian Grocery store. Indian Grocery & Spice to buy Cumin.

Twitter, Facebook and Tiny URL

It took me a while to understand the point of Twitter but at the Recruiting Road Show I saw the light.

You can search them outside of your network and outside of your network can search yours.
You can also add a URL of what you want to promote, shorten it with Tiny URL and make it appear in both your Facebook and Twitter Status.

You will need to have both a Facebook and Twitter account.

Add the Twitter application on Facebook
http://apps.facebook.com/twitter/

You can then update Twitter from Facebook and Facebook from Twitter.

Write your blurb, for example "I am looking for IT Account Executives in SF, NYC and LA"
Take the URL of your job description to Tiny URL and it will spit out http://tinyurl.com/5tbvj4
(normal URL's would be too long)

Then cut and past "I am looking for IT Account Executives in SF, NYC and LA http://tinyurl.com/5tbvj4"

Those interested can click directly on your link.
You can also do this for resumes or events.

Pundits and Marcus Ronaldi

I am sure the entire blogsphere and pundits are sitting around their round tables discussing how me, the Greatest Blog, was wrong.
People asked my opinion about the result of the election and I said, it was going to be way closer than anyone imagined.
I expected it to be unsettled until tomorrow.

I did not expect John McCain to be tossing in the towel prior to 9 PM. I am disappointed that Sarah "Dancing with the Stars followed by host of the View" Palin did not have a few words.
I will admit, I like John McCain. But the first decision he made was Sarah Palin. Honestly she makes the Redskins picking Heath Shuler look good.

Starbucks gave free coffee today and I have four cups at four different Starbucks.
I spoke to this 85 year old WWII veteran and he told me, he voted for Obama. Made me think of Mary, she said how impressed she was with him

I heard him speak a number of times but thought, I lived in a bubble.

Was proven wrong.

Now the hard part begins.

Election + The Redskins lose + Graphic Novels..

So tomorrow is election day.
My thought is that the election will be far closer than anyone expects.
(So far all of my predictions about this election have mostly been wrong so do not be betting on anything I say)

This kind of reminds me when I really wanted Joe Gibbs to return and coach the Redskins. It happened but it was like a Beatles re-union in 1978 if they made the Sgt Peppers Movie. Sometimes when you get what you want, the results are not what you think (one playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Bucs and then losing twice to the Seattle Seahawks)

Some people will be disappointed tomorrow night and others will be disappointed months from now. (or then again I have no clue what I am talking about and you can go about your business)

I think the worst thing that ever happened to the Republican Party was Bush getting re-elected in 2004. Even if Kerry had won, Katrina would have still happened and we would still be in Iraq. I do not think the Democrats would have made the massive gains in 2006 (and I am guessing tomorrow) had Kerry been elected.

I went into the city to watch the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football (it was raining which is perfect football watching weather...) at a company called Sponge Cell which does some sort of advertising. They were all wearing Pittsburgh gear and I thought they would raze me but I announced that I went to Penn State and something about the Penguins and Iron City Beer and those sandwiches with French Fries. For example if I meet people from Atlanta I go on about the Varsity.

US Half 2008 (Weather, Time, Monkeys)

Based on yesterdays weather (awful) and the forecast I thought I would have the pleasure of running the US Half in the pouring rain but for the most part it was not raining.
Ran into the two people that I knew before the race. They were both running their first half and I told them about the importance of pacing.
Was happy with the run which was nine minutes faster than my last time running this course (but three minutes slower than two weeks ago)

It was my third half marathon in the last 30 days. I am glad they cancelled kickball playoffs because post-half marathon, I am a bit of a zombie.
Considered getting Wanton soup but lost motivation. Also did not get my New York Times.

Rain and leaving your cell phone at home and Kickball Prom

The weather was yuck yuck today.
I had to pick up my USHalf bib/number at the Expo so I assumed it was in the same place that it was last year.

My first step was to go to the sports basement to donate my old fred containers (shoes) as they were too many fred containers around my apartment. I left my cell phone at home.
Then I drove to Ft Mason/Marina 24 Hour Fitness. I walked to where the expo was last year and they were having some sort of ski event. I then walked over the hill in the pouring rain but I could not see where they were setting up giving out numbers. Then a very soggy Marcus walked to the Marina Library and I logged onto the Internet and saw that the Expo was at Sports Basement! I had walked right past the sign an hour earlier!!!
So I drove back to Sports Basement and then walked in the back to get my number.

Later went to my Kickball teams Kickball Prom pre-party. A half marathon at 7 AM equates to an early night in. Hoping it dries out tomorrow. They cancelled kickball playoffs so I do not have to do the half marathon followed by kickball routine. So one of the story lines continue.

Winding down..

Drove to Santa Clara and it was fairly empty. I am happy with the duration of the gig.
Like many themes in my life, kickball, the 3 half marathons, team in training they all seem to run its course at the same time.
Things will pick up and I will be busy again.

What I need to do, is embrace the lull. Relax. Read books. Work out at the gym. Maybe learn how to juggle.

Got notice that they were giving away free food at Chipotle for those dressed like their favorite menu item so I wrapped my arm in foil.
While walking towards the place I saw a police woman and took the foil off my arm lest she think that I am some sort of mutant from the future.

Went to a halloween party dressed as Frank Chu and it was not a big Frank Chu crowd so I had to explain it.
